Carrier has Arrived!!

Hello every. I have some awesome goodies for you folks out there. Carrier has Arrived!! No, you didn't hear it wrong. Carriers are deemed to be the most inefficient unit for its cost and nobody I mean nobody, 99.9% of us wouldn't even bother to get them in our solo matches.

However, hidden gems are constantly being discovered in Starcraft 2 as the game is only two months old. A lot of new strategies are being invented and different play styles are being tested everyday. Some became the bread and butter strategy while others are left forgotten.

What I have you here is a video of the awesomeness of carriers casted by Day9, the famous commentator. This is suppose to be a Funday Monday session of Day9 where, he will gives everyone a specific point in what he wanted for his cast on every Monday. On this cast, players are required to build a carrier before starting an expo which is seemed to be very unheard of due to the high carrier cost as well as the tech required. All credit goes to Day9.

In this video we have the best Protoss player on Starcraft 2, non other than Huk. If you don't know who this genius Protoss player is, go ahead and type in www.sc2rank.com. Hes currently rank 1 in the world and has won the past MLG Starcraft 2 tournament. These replays are being played on the ladder. Go ahead and watch it. I bet you won't be disappointed.

The Infamous Protoss 4 Gate Rush

Every Protoss player should already know or should know this build order strategy because this is one of the most fearsome tactics a Protoss user can muster. This is basically the Protoss 101. Mastering this strategy alone can brings you into the Diamond club. What is so strong about this strategy is its ability to constantly warping in units from your Warpgates with the use of a proxy pylon. Your army size grows significantly in a short time. Basically here is a standard build order for a 4 Warpgate rush.

9 Pylon
10 Chrono Boost 2 Probes out
12 Gateway
14 Assimilator
16 Pylon
18 Cybernetics Core
19 2nd Assimilator

Remember to put 3 Probes into your Assimilator when it is done. When Cybernetics Core is done research the Warpgate technology. Build 3 more Gateways when you have enough minerals. Remember to constantly produce probes until you have 16-24 Probes on your minerals. You can also spend 1 to 2 Chrono Boost on your Warpgate research.

When your Warpgate is done, make your Gateways into Warpgates. From here on you can move out towards your opponent and build a Proxy Pylon outside your opponents base. Constantly warp in units from your Warpgates. With your army you may win the match right there.

If you fail on the push, do not hesitate to pull back and macro up like building an expo or you can build more army and push again.

Here is a video on 4 Warpgating. This strategy works very well against all other races.

Please leave your comments on what you wish to learn more about and I will try my best to provide them.

Hotkeys

Hotkeys shortcuts are one of the most important aspects of Starcraft 2 or any Real Time Strategy games. With hotkeys, you can constantly build units while in battle without moving your main screen back to your base and individually clicking on your gateways or any production facilities. This greatly saves your time and you can focus on your main battles. This will help to increase your general macro significantly. Blizzard has done a wonderful job in assigning hotkeys for every unit and building. Every hotkey assigned is almost perfect for SC2 players.
I will show you how I assign my hotkeys in my general gameplay with build order.
  • When game starts immediately click on your Nexus and press E to build a probe.
  • Then select all your 6 Probes and right click them to a mineral patch towards left or right. Immediately select 3 of the probes and right click them to another mineral patch of the opposite direction. This helps to increase your mineral collection by probably 20 minerals out of 300. During this stage, I will hotkey my Nexus to 5.
  • Keep building probes till 9/10 food. Then depending on where you wish to build a pylon, if it’s next to your nexus, send the probe over when you have 80 minerals. If it’s further away, send when you have 60 minerals. To build using hotkey, press B followed by E and left click on the location. This is the first step of using hotkey to build. You can then send this probe to scout and hotkey it to 1.
  • I will then hotkey another probe at base which is nearest to the Pylon to 2. So basically 1 for scouting Probe, 2 for base building Probe and 5 for Nexus.
  • When you have approximately 120 minerals press 2 to select your base Probe and walk him next to the Pylon and press B then G and left click. This immediately builds a Gateway and hotkey it to 3.
  • At 14 probes, build an assimilator by pressing B then A.
  • At 16 build a Pylon.
  • At 17 build a Cybernetics Core by pressing B then Y.
  • At this stage onwards my hotkey will basically look like
    • 1: Main Army
    • 2: Base building probe which is then replaced by Phoenix, Observers, High Templar or Colossus depending on your unit composition. If you plan to do an early 4 Warpgate Push, Ill hotkey the proxy Pylon near my opponent’s base to 2.
    • 3: Gateways/Warpgates
    • 4: Robotic Facility/Stargate
    • 5: Nexus
  • I prefer to use hotkeys from 1 to 5 only. Basically the hotkeys above provides you with good base management as well as army control.
  • Thus in general, if you plan to build a Zealot from a Gateway, just press 3 followed by Z. If you wish to cast Psi Storm from your High Templar, just press 2 followed by T.
  • The SHIFT Key is a very important tool to queue commands. Ill show you some basic use of them. Say you have 5 Stalkers battling your opponents 5 Stalkers. You select your army by pressing 1. Then while holding down SHIFT key, right click his Stalkers one by one. Your army will focus down his Stalker 1 by 1. Thus you can win this battle easily if your opponent chooses not to micro them.
  • SHIFT key also works during your base construction. For eg, if you wish to build 2 Pylons in a row, instead of pressing B, E left click and wait for the first pylon to start construct and the B, E again. You can eliminate this by pressing B, E and hold down SHIFT key and left click and left click again. This will build 2 Pylons together.
  • Hotkeys may seem to be a bit frustrating at first but once you memorize and got used to them, you are at another level from before.
  • And remember to Practice! Practice! Practice!
The checklist table below states the individual hotkeys for every units and production buildings for Protoss.

Starcraft 2 First Post

Hi all,

This blog will totally be related to tips on Starcraft 2 and will be update daily. I will provide as much tips and strategies as possible. I play mostly team games on the South East Asian Server. I have tried out the NA Server but the lag is just terrible. Sometimes I will post links to commentaries or guides from others where I think is appropriate to improve your gameplay. This is my SC2 profile.

Protoss is my main race so most of my articles will be related to the Protoss race.

This is my first time blogging. First of all let me introduce myself. I have been a gamer for a long period of time. Its been approximately 12 years since the first time I have put my hands on Real Time Strategy Games. Warcraft 2 is my first game followed by Starcraft. However, I did not really got into those games. This is followed by Diablo and Diablo 2. I did indeed spent some time playing around these on Battle.net. Counter Strike is the very first game where I have spent a huge amount of time practicing on LAN cafes and online.

Warcraft3. Ahhh. This is the game I have spent seriously tons of time on it. Mostly team games as well. This is my Battle.net profile and has been inactive since the release of SC2.

Being a long time Warcraft 3 player really gives me an advantage when I first start playing Starcraft 2. Warcraft is a game more towards the micro factor where Starcraft is towards the macro factor. I did mostly team games on SC but I will be starting to practice solo now. Remember do not feel bad when you lose. Watch the replay and see what you did wrong in the game and learn from it. You actually learn more from your mistakes than your successes. And Finally Practice! Practice! Practice!
