The 6th Sense of StarCraft or Gamesense

Most of you will probably heard of the term Game sense and you may or may not have any knowledge of what does it really means.

Game-sense or game-centred approach is the use of games or match play situations where the players are empowered to think of tactics, quick decision making and problem solving in a highly motivational environment. (http://www.bharatiyahockey.org/gurukul/class2.htm)
The definition above gives a very clear description on what a game sense is. In a game of Starcraft, very often you encounter situation that requires a very quick thinking of strategy, for eg. when your opponent starts to build a Pylon and Proxy cannon at your base in a PvP match. You have to make a very very quick decision here whether will you be able to stop those cannons from going up or prepare with getting an expo up, or getting cannons of your own.

All this does not come during the first time you are facing a new strategy. Say this is your first game of SC and your opponent comes and Cannon cheese you. Most of the newer players will have trouble in facing something new. As you play more games and practice more, you will most likely to face a different wide variety of strategies being thrown at you by your opponents. Be it a fast bio push, banshees, 6 pool rushes, proxy gate zealots, very quick hatchery expo etc. You will start to slowly adept to what is being thrown at you.

This is what game sense generally comes in. A lot of the times, a majority of players will not be able to predict the outcome of a battle. You have 10 Stalkers facing and army of 50 Speedlings. A good player will be able to tell the he will most likely to lose the battle. A player without much experience will try to engage the battle and lose all of his Stalkers. This is one of the important aspects of game sense, to be able to predict the outcome of a battle. Too many times have I seen my Random Team allies engage a battle the is impossible to win.

This should be a better example. You send your 9th Pylon probe to scout your opponent. Upon reaching his base, you see no Pylons or whatsoever. Your first response will be to start scouting your base surroundings for proxy cannons or gateways. This is a game sense. A lot of pro players can tell approximately what their opponents has at a give point of time. Say a Colossus shouldn't appear at 5 mins of the time as it's most likely an Illusion.
You have read from a forum from Team-liquid.net on how to stop cannon rushes in PvP. The next time, you face someone who cannon rushes you. From what you, had read, you are required to send 3-4 probes per cannon, 1 to chase his probe, while chrono boosting out your Zealot. You manage to stop the rush and win the game. This is what you have learn. So basically you will do the same tactic to fight off cannon rushes every time.

In my opinion game sense comes purely on practice and experience. The more you practice against and with a strategy, the more you understand the match up. You will most likely to make the decision based on your previous encounter with the same strategy that wins you the game. You will see a lot of pro players being thrown off their game, when something unexpected happens. Game sense tells you what you should do during certain situation.

Finally, Game Sense generally is an accumulation of experience and practice that automatically tells you what is the course of action during certain situation which requires a very quick thinking and decision making. Finally remember to practice, practice and practice.

KOTH Nani vs Ret PvZ SC2 Tips

Sup,

This is the King of the Hill series, where the winner stays and the loser is out. A week later, a new challenger will face the previous week winner and this goes on. Today we have Naniwa the very good Protoss which is famous for his Dual Nani Stargate Phoenix strategy. A lot of you including me have quite a bit of problem against Zerg since the new patch. A lot of Protoss are complaining about the effectiveness of Roaches in PvZ. These videos casted by Colin will give you some insight of the matchup. Whether Nani wins or lose you will learn a lot from these games. Enjoy.

A good korean PvT

This is generally what you Protoss players want to do against Terran. Survive, get Colossus. A lot of games can end here. However, if game goes longer, get Zealot legs and High Templar for Storm. If you manage to survive so far, you will mostly win the game against most Terran due to your Tech advantage against a same food army or his slightly bigger army. Colossus + Zealot Charge+Storm = GG Terran. Enjoy.

Street Fighter 3 Match of the Millenium!!

This has nothing to do with SC2. This video is a must watch for every Street Fighter fans. Even if your non it's still a must watch. Daigo the legendary Street Fighter player well know for his Ryu and Ken usage against Justin a top tiered player as well. They are playing in the finals of an old tournament. Just to let you know a Parry can be performed to stop any damage from your opponent. You only have a very small MILI SECONDS to use this. Watch it for yourself.

PvP Stopping Cannon Rush

Cannon rush is a very effective strategy on lower leagues. If you want to know how to perform this scroll to my previous post on how to perform it. This video shows you how to stop a cannon rush as a Protoss. A failure to scout a cannon rush means a loss normally for you as it's very very hard to stop once a cannon or two goes up.

Normally you will send your 9th Probe to build a Pylon and then sending him out to scout. Upon reaching your opponents base, this will tell you what your opponent is doing. If you see a forge up, be PREPARED for cannon rush. Quickly scout around your base for the Probe and hidden pylon. Start pulling your mining Probes to attack the Pylon and any upcoming Cannon and sending another two Probes to chase the opponents Probe. So basically 4 Probes on any cannon that starts building, 2 Probes chasing your opponents Probe and Chrono boost out your Zealot. 4 Probes will take down a cannon that is starting to build. Your main point is not to let any cannon go up which surviving till your Zealot is out. If you manage to stop their cannon rush, most of the time your seriously ahead of your income.

If your opponent manage to get up a few cannon at your base, do not give up. You still have the last option of saving up 400 minerals and throw up an expansion at the Gold expo if theres any. You can still climb back from here due to a lot of players thought they already had you with the cannons.

Another way to stop a cannon rush is to build cannons your self. Having your own Cannons up will stop their cannons from creeping to your Nexus. You can also proxy 2 Gateways outside your opponents base and base trade. Try out these strategies any see which works best for you. Good luck!!

I cant find any good videos using the Probe on cannon strategy. This video will show and example of getting an expo up.

Cheers.

This is how you play SC!!

This is how your suppose to play and micro in SC. If you cant and don't have 300 apm, you don't deserve to SC. Lol I'm just joking. These 2 guys are pros from Warcraft 3, Moon and Lyn at GSL season 2 Qualifier.

Cannon Rush in PvP

Cannon rush is a CHEESE which works best in PvP. This is a basic build order here.

9 Pylon
11 Forge
12 Pylon
12 Cannon
Pylon+Cannon

Try to hide your Probe at the edge of your opponents base unseen with your 9th Probe that build your first Pylon. Keep this Probe alive at all cost. Basically this is a straightforward strategy. Be prepared when your successful and your opponent will rage. This cheese strategy is mostly done on lower leagues such as the silver and bronze level. Remember to continue building Probe at your base when possible. If your opponent doesn't leave when you have a few cannons at their base, try to build up your own base with Gateways etc. They may be hiding an expansion somewhere.

Do take note the build order isn't fixed, so you can do any variation of it which deemed feasible. This standard cannon rushing will not work against Zerg due to their creep and Terran which they can lift off.

TvP Beware, Protoss players out there!!

This is a game played by Lyn the Warcraft 3 WCG champion against a very good Terran OgstheSTC. Terran has a new way to cheese Protoss!!

Watch yourself to find out what actually happened!!

A Crazy PvP: DT vs Colossus

Here we have a PvP match between Kiwikaki and Naniwa from King of the hill showmatch casted by SCworldit. A crazily close PvP match where one player ops for Dark Templar route while the other went for Colossus. Watch for yourself how this PvP unfolds.

Part 1

Part 2

Zealots 1 Banelings 0

Lol, this is a good video of how do you defend against Ling and Baneling bust at your main, Probes and Zealots. Kiwikaki the Protoss master pulls a magnificent micro against the Top Zerg player Machine. Pay attention to how he focus those Baneling with a Zealot and micro his probes around to prevent any bust. Machine went for a Baneling bust because he saw Kiwikaki's dual gate. Banelings are very effective against a Protoss player who has only Zealots.

If you are facing a Zerg who are trying to Baneling bust you when you went 2 gate build, try to hold out as long as possible till your opponent ran out of Zerglings. If you manage to hold out and doesn't lose too many Probes, you are way ahead. This Baneling bust+Ling push is quite considered an all in. Zerg has to sacrifice their Drone production for those Zerglings.

Korean 4 Gate Push PvP

Wassup guys,

This is a very famous 4 gate push which basically resolves around getting out Warpgate technology as soon as possible. What distinguishes this from its close relative the normal 4 gate push is where you only mines 50 gas for the Warpgate technology. Then you pull your gas probes and put them into minerals. This is then done by building as many Pylons around your opponents base and start warping in Zealots when Warpgate is done. This strategy is obscenely effective and strong in PvP and done by lots of Diamond level players.Heres the build order.

10 Pylon
10 Gateway
Chrono boost out 2 probes
13 Assimilator
Chrono boost out 2 more probes and SAVE ur Chrono boost from now on
15 Cybernetic Core
When Core is up start dumping Chrono boost on the WarpGate Tech from start to finish
18 Gate
18 Gate
18 Gate
Star building pylons at opponent's base when WarpGate Tech is 3/4 Done.

When Warpgate is done, its best to start warping in Zealots in their mineral line. The first wave of Zealots will not win you right there, but the second and third wave will mostly end the game. Why is this strategy works wonders, is you are constantly Chrono Boosting your WarpGate Tech as compared to your opponent who are mostly Chrono boosting Probes for standard 12 Gate build. You will start warping in Zealots before your opponent get his. If your opponent starts kiting your Zealot with Stalkers, send 1 Zealot to chase around each Stalker.

Heres a video tutorial. Enjoy.

Basic Protoss and Gameplay Mechanics by EmoStarcraft

Hello,

I have manage to find some very good Protoss guide by EmoStarcraft. Basically these 3 Parts video outlines what is written in my previous articles. These videos are a MUST watch for lower band players and try to learn as much as possible. Probably these videos will give you a better understanding and insight of the Protoss race. Do take note, these were patch 1.0. Cheers.

Part 1 Basic Protoss and Game Mechanics, Countering Proxy Two Gate

The SC1 Legend Boxer vs Idra TvZ

Yup, the Starcraft 1 legend, Boxer which won countless tournaments in Korea and deemed to be the very best Starcraft 1 player of all time takes on Idra, the top and favourite Zerg player in Korea. Idra is among the very first foreign professional player of Starcraft 2 in Korea. The map is on Zel Naga Caverns. Enjoy.

4v4 Replay

Here I have for you a 4v4 RT game of me and Keywinds, my friend in party. So its us+2 random players. Do take note that my Zerg ally dropped off early of the game. I do generally prefer my allies to leave for the huge income boost. This replay will give you a general taste of how to play 4v4. This is a great game and you guys should give it a try.

High Level PvP

This is a high level PvP commentary done by Husky between two highly ranked Protoss Huk and Axslav on Lost Temple. Husky has done a very good job here describing and analysing the game. You will always want to kill your opponents scouting probe to deny them from knowing which tech path you choose by getting out a Stalker. This hides your tech either in the form of 4 gate push, 1 gate robo, 2 or 3 gates robo build. Pay attention to their micros as well. Micro is very important as it can win or lose you a battle. Basically I will put it this way. Most early to mid game PvP matchups are determined by Gateway units plus some Immortals and War of the Worlds for the late game(Collosus) not taking into consideration of Cannon or proxy Gateway cheeses. Enjoy!

4v4 Team Game Strategy

A lot of you may be interested in this post. Finally, a strategy on 4v4 Team Game. First of all, I would define 4v4 whether an Arrange Team(AT) or Random Team(RT) game as a more active mindset as compared to solo 1v1 which is more towards a reactive playstyle. What I mean here is in solo, taking the Protoss v Terran matchup where a lot of Protoss players will start with a 1 Gateway 1 Robo Build. The advantage of this build is when your observer is out, you can send it to your opponents base to scout what the Terran player's unit composition and tech he has. This will determine your strategy from here on either of getting a Robotics Bay, more Gateways or setting up an expo. This is deemed a very safe build in PvT. Scouting information is one of the most important aspect of Starcraft. So basically you tailor your build to counter your opponents.

As compared to 4v4 which is a more active playstyle, where basically before you start or in the beginning of a game, you choose and determine a strategy path. This is due to the nature of team games where massing units is given a higher priority. A 400 food army will decimate a 200 food army anytime anyday. For instance, I will go stalkers or I will go zealots and Dark Templar tech or fast Void Ray strategy. You first determine a strategy you want to perform. During the game, perform the strategy. You will see a lot of players chooses the mass Blink Stalker build. This is a very strong strategy and probably my favorite one as well. The main advantages are the ability of constantly warp in units and the ease to transition into Dark Templars or High Templars. Blinking micro is very essential in this strategy. Blinking back a stalker or a few stalkers at a time when they are hit can win your countless battles. Stalker Blink micro is actually very easy to perform. When you see your front line Stalkers are being damage, just click on them and blink them back. Viola.

However, you do not stick to this strategy a 100%. Heres an example, I always build a Pylon at my main entrance at 9 and send this Probe out to scout. Upon reaching your opponents base, you see two Zerg opponents getting a very early Spawning Pool at 6 or 7 which is near completion or has already completed. This is a critical moment where you need to react against them either build Chrono Boost out Zealots and pulling out some Probes to defend or putting down another Gateway at your choke doing a full wall off. You may think this is overreact but let me tell you. You are not facing 6 Zergling like in 1v1 but double or triple the amount. 1 Zealot at a choke can only hold 5 Zerglings. Try your best to hold out as long as possible while waiting for your allies for reinforcement. If you are being taken down, do not worry, your allies will have better tech and a counter push can be done.

Here I'll outline some of the main Protoss strategy.
  • 4 WarpGate Stalkers
  • Zealot + Fast Dark Templar (Warp in 3 or 4 Dark Templars when your tech is done and send 1 to each of your opponents base and start killing workers. If they move their workers away, focus down the main. Most of the time your Protoss or Zerg opponent will have a detection unless a cannon or two. Only Terran can scan but can only save 1 or 2 of his allies)
  • Zealot + Robotics Facility (Collosus)
  • Void Ray (I personally thinks that Void Ray is bad in 4v4 due to the ease of countering them)
  • Zealots + Phoenix (This is a very good strategy if there are two or more Zergs for your opponent. Hunting down Overlords and countering Mutalisks which is very common in 4v4)
  • Zealot rush (This needs the help from everyone on your team for maximum damage either in the form of fast reapers, ling rush etc)
And remember to expo when you have the opportunity. Once your expo is up, make more Warpgates or any production buildings.

Finally remember do not engage a fight alone against two or more opponents unless you have a superior army. Just wait for your allies or you will be totally crushed leaving your allies to 3v4. Basically 4v4 is a teamwork game and only fight when most of your allies are together.

Cheers.

AT in RT?

Today I'll talk about the Arranged Team feature in Random Team. What this option is that you can create and invite your own party and search the Random Team feature with +1 or +2 player. So if you and your buddy is on a party with 2 players, you can actually search the Arranged Team 2v2 or Random Team 3v3 and 4v4. Rankings of the 2v2 will be considered Arranged Team of you and your buddy and will be ranked. However, if you searched the 3v3 or 4v4 feature, these wins are actually being considered into your 3v3 and 4v4 Random Team stats. If you have a party of 3, you can search the Random Team 4v4 feature, where 4v4 will be calculated towards your 4v4 Random Team Wins.

Blizzard has created a very interesting feature. On the pros, this system lets only 2 players to play 3 or 4 persons game. This can be quite a fun aspect if your not into the 2 player SC2 style. Unlike Warcraft 3, your team will be considered an Arranged Team whenever you have invited your friends.

The downside of this system is the creation of a unbalance team to some aspect. Team work is one of the most important factor in Starcraft team games. If your searching a Random Team 4v4, you always has the probability of being matched against a 4v4 Arranged Team. Usually an arranged team party has a better teamwork as compared to being with random players.

What me and my friends have done is to have a party of 2s to search RT 3v3 or 4v4 and a party of 3s to search RT 4v4. If both of you are decent, you can be placed into the Diamond tier very soon with a good win ratio. We have a 80-90% win ratio on our RT without actually counting the real RT. However, you will realize that, the higher you place, the points being awarded to you has a huge fluctuation. I have actually gotten a +0 points in RT 4v4 with a party of 2 due to the match making system.

Overall, I think this is an decent feature, as team games are mostly considered casual as compared to solo 1v1. Team games are mostly being played with friends in a more relaxed environment. Finally enjoy SC2.

What I have for you today will be an epic 2v2 Zerg+Protoss mirror team being casted by AleesaSC. Do take note this is prepatch. This will give you some idea of the SC team games. Do tell me if you want my personal Team Game replays on the comment section and please follow this blog if you find this blog interesting.

Cheers.
