Terran 2v2 Mass Hellion Strategy

Mass Hellions strategy is probably the most common and effectively Starcraft 2v2 team game strategy used by Terrans. Hellions are one of the most efficient in terms of costs which is only 100 minerals with an extremely short build time of 30 in game seconds. With the help of a Reactor, you will be able to train 2 Hellions at a time. Massing Hellions is extremely easy and effective early in the game. Once Blue Flame upgrade is done, they deal insane amount of damage to Light units.

If you have been playing 2v2 SC2 online games, you will be coming across a lot of Terran and Zerg 2v2 team combination. Take note, the Terran and Zerg team is probably the best combo in the current 2v2 team game scene. This is mainly due to both of the races ability to pump out and mass units very early in the game. Zerglings are very cheap and effective. Hellions and Marines are very economical and cost efficient. Together they deal insane amount of damage early in the game. Very often, 2v2 games last only 10 minutes in game time and seldom beyond that. Rushes and massing up cheap units is the most commonly deployed 2v2 tactics and strategy.

In the event of Protoss in 2v2 team games, I am sad to say that the Protoss race do not work very well in 2v2 team games. Why is this so you may ask? The answer lies in the Protoss mechanic itself. Protoss units are generally strong but very expensive in minerals and gas. Their units takes a long time to build as compared to the other 2 races. The most deployed strategy in 2v2 is definitely the 4 gate. Thus, Protoss's strenght will be kicking in during the 5:30 to 6 minutes mark, where your WarpGate research will be done at this time with a 4 Gate ready. However, prior to this timing mark, you will probably be at a very dangerous position as you are most likely to be facing pressure from your opponents such as Marines and Zerglings.

Another major weakness for the Protoss is the inability to aid your ally at this point. At most, you will be having 3 units, a Zealot with 2 Stalkers or Sentries. Moving out to help your ally at this stage is probably very risky and you are expecting your ally to hold off 2 opponents. However, maps play a very important role here as well. Large maps do favor defensive play, thus, it is safe to assume that early rushes are very unlikely.

Lets come back to mass Hellions. Terran has probably the most cost efficient unit in terms of Marines. However, the Hellions too are probably the most cost effective units. They deal insane amount of damage to Light Units such as Zerglings, workers, Zealots and Marines. These units are the most commonly used units in 2v2. Thus, Hellions are insanely strong and effective in the 2v2 online game metagame currently.

Build Order
  • 9 Depot
  • Your Zerg Ally should by an Extractor at your Gas at 10 food for Zerg (For those who doesn't know this, you can mine Gas from the Extractor build on your Gas) This is what 2v2 is. Sharing minerals and unit combination.
  • 12 Rax
  • Start mining Gas when Extractor is done
  • Build Factory when Barracks is done. (Place beside the Barracks)
  • You generally skip your first Marine unless facing early Zergling rushes.
  • Orbital Command upgrade.
  • Reactor on Barracks
  • Supply Depot
  • When Reactor is done switch Factory over and build 2 Hellions
  • When 2 Hellions are done go pressure your opponent with your allies Zerglings. (around the 4:30 minute mark) Continue to build Hellions
  • Build a second Factory with Tech Lab add on. (Upgrade Blue Flame research and continue to mass up Hellions)
  • At this stage onwards, continue to pressure your opponents and micro your Hellions well. You can often times end the game at this point with good microed Hellions.
If your ally is not building the Extractor for you, you can get your gas 11 Food. You can continue to mass Hellions at the later stages of the game or switch to Tanks or Banshees. But often times, the 2v2 game is very short in general.

In general you should always attack the Zerg opponent first. Terran and Protoss generally has a nice wall. This leaves the Zerg player very vulnerable to this kind of play as your will be 2v1 him. If his ally is coming for his aid, go ahead to take him out with both of your armies.

Zergling with Hellions combo is currently the strongest and most effective in the online game Battlenet metagame currently. The perfect combination of Zerg and Terran with cheap and effective units triumph every other race combination. Hellions are fun if you manage to sneak them into your opponents mineral line. Watch the workers evaporate in an instant.

Good luck in winning your 2v2 games.
