The most wonderful part of Starcraft 2 team games (2v2, 3v3 or 4v4) is where you are allowed to create your own team strategies. This is often contrasted from the solo 1v1 match where build order is one of the most important factors in the match. In team games you are given the pleasure to perform a wider variety of builds. However, you will still need to react to what your opponents are doing such as when the Zergs are 8 Pooling or Cannon rushing.
Often times in team games, you can make a slight change to the build itself. Lets take an example here from a 4 Gate Protoss build used in solo and team games. In Starcraft 2 solo 1v1, you always need around 3 units from your first Gateway such as Zealot Stalker Sentry or any variations. However, in team games such as 4v4, you can always get away with only building a Zealot holding your front choke if there are no signs of aggressiveness by your opponents. Instead of spending towards the Stalker and Sentry use the resources to squeeze out extra Probes, a second gas or faster Gateways.
Through experience, players in 2v2 are much more aggressive. This often relates to the difficulty of defending two aggressive builds by a player individually. If your ally is going for some macro heavy build while your being pushed hard, you team will most likely lose the game. Thus, always have good balance when creating a 2v2 team game strategy as builds are often times very unforgiving. React to what your opponents are doing.
You can always based your whole team strategy towards aggressiveness. In 2v2 builds such as Roach + Marines, 4 Gates + Marines, Speedlings + 4 Gates, Zealots + Marines are extremely strong. There must be some synergy on the army composition such as Zealots acting as the meat shield tanks for Marines etc.
3v3 stands in between 2v2 and 4v4 team games. Strategies from the other team games will most likely work here.
In 4v4, with three allies on your side, you can always use strategies such as 3 players staying on low tech armies while another opting for higher tech such as Banshees, Dark Templars, Mutalisk tech etc. The person performing the teching role will always be the one with the safest base surrounded by the allies on both sides or the inner base. This gives you enough protection and time to achieve the desired units.
Finally, always try out new strategies in Starcraft 2 and enjoy the game itself. Mix and match your own team strategies and find out the one that works best and suitable to your own playstyle.
Cheers.
