4v4 Team Game Strategy - Part 4 - Protoss

This is the forth series of articles which I will be talking on 4v4 team game strategy. On this current article, which a lot of you may be waiting for which will be on specific which is Protoss on Part 4. I am advocating an article for each race and will be starting with Protoss which is my main races all this while for my solo and starting race. Protoss will definitely be my very best race out of all three races. I have only started to play the Random Races after I had gotten my 750 Protoss Team Game icon. Oh my sexy Selendis. Thus, I have much much more experience with Protoss in general.

As I said before, during the loading screen, once you have seen your opponent's races as well as your allies' decide a strategy at this point to start your game. Take into consideration the maps and your starting position. For example, on a map with 2 allies sharing a base and if you have a Terran ally, you can ask him to wall the ramp for you while you can build your Pylon and Gateway next to your Nexus.

SCOUT

In general, as a Protoss player in 4v4 games, it is your responsibility to do the scouting after the first Pylon when you have 9/10 food. Why is this you may ask. THis is due to the nature of Protoss where you do not lose building time during construction as compared to Terran and Zerg. It is the most costly to scout with Zerg as early game resources is very very essential for Zerg as well as the limited supply of larva.

So you have sent your 9th Probe out to do the scouting. Scouting well requires good skill as well. For instance, the amount of micro required. This shouldn't be a problem for Platinum, Diamond and Masters players but may posed a problem for lower league players. So try to practice it. I recommend hotkey your scouting Probe to key your most comfortable with.

Next you have to pay attention for what to look for during scouting. When you reach a Zerg's base pay attention to when does the Zerg player puts down his Spawning Pool. For example when your scout reaches his base on a close distance, this means that a 6 or 7 pool is coming your way. Notify your allies immediately and prepare for the onslaught. When you scout a Protoss pay attention whether is he building up a Gateway or Forge. Often times, I see players doesn't bother to click on the building to even determine it at ending up being cannoned which is a good way to throw away the game. Do pay attention whether is he Getting a second Gateway as well. As for Terran you can always tell by is he getting his gas early. However, most Terrans starts with a double Barracks on 4v4.

BUILD

Build build which is often related to macro. Say, you have decided to use a 4 gate strategy. After you scout with your Probe after your first pylon, continue with your build normally. If your on a 2 allies sharing 1 base map with a Terran and he is walling the front for both of you, you can always get away with just Chrono boosting your Warpgate Research while building no units from your first Gateway. Thus you can get your Warpgate done asap without cutting any Probes in between.

STRATEGY

I'll outline the general strategies being used on 4v4 team games.

I) 4 Gate: This is where you get armies from 4 gates whether with a single or double gas

II) Blink Stalkers: 4 gates and a Twilight council. You can start your Twilight council when your Warpgate is done or before. Micro is very essential when using blink Stalkers. Try to blink your front Stalkers that has taken damage and blink them to the back row and repeat.

III)Super Fast Dark Templars: You can start with a 9th Pylon, 12 Gate or even a 10th Pylon 10th Gate. If your using this strategy, grab your second gas asap as Dark Templars require an obscene amount of gas. After warping Dts in try to seperate them and haress each opponent bases individually. This is often the trick. If you can get Dts very very early, most of the time, this may catch your opponents off guard without any Detectors. Dts at a Protoss bases is the scariest moment in the world. I have experience enough of this

III) Robo Build: Some of you may probably prefer some sort of 3 gate ROBO into Colossus build. In general, I think this strategy is very very bad. Rushing for Colossus off one bases require a lot of gas. You will be ending up with Zealots + Colossus army which is not the best. Getting the Robo for Immortals isn't a bad idea. You can also get some Observers for scouting information

IV) Stargate Build: Since the nerf of Void Ray where the speed upgrade has been removed, I feel that going for Void Ray only build is bad as well. On the other hand Phoenix build time has been buffed. This is a really opportunity here. For instance there are 3 Zergs as your opponent. You can always rush for a 2 Stargate mass Phoenix Strategy. This works extremely well where you can hunt for Overlords and do massive amount of damage.

V) Mass Zealot Build with legs: You are acting as the meat shield for your entire team. You will have a massive amount of gas stock up if your going for mass Zealots. Remember to feed your allies.

VI) Proxy 2 Gateway: Where you proxy a pylon and 2 gateways near your opponent's base. 10-10-10 is the general build 10 pylon, 10 gate and 10 gate.

VII) Cannon rush: The cheese strategy. On some maps you can cannon outside your opponent's base and use your allies Overlords to gain vision.

Hmm I guess I'll stop here now. Stay tuned for the next series Terran. GG
