Terran Dominance on Battlenet Online Game Ladders

A quick search on sc2ranks revealed that the Terran race has been currently dominating several SC2 Battlenet online game ladders. Terran has always been the very best race since Starcraft Brood War. A majority of high caliber players has chosen the Terran race as the race is often considered giving the highest reward on the performance by the player himself.

First of all lets take a look at the top 10 spots at the currently Battlenet online game ladders from Korea, North Ameria and Europe servers. These 3 are the largest servers with player base and are deemed the most competitive among the servers. Servers such as SEA, Latin America, Taiwan, Russia and the newly launched China server will probably not give a clearer view for the results. Results are taken on 25th May 2011.

Lets take a look at the current top 10 players from the Korean online game server. A quick check here indicates that 9 of they players are Terran with only one Zerg. Not even a Protoss make it into the top 10 on the Korean ladder which is very surprising. The highest placed Protoss player is none other than oGsMC the best Protoss in the world currently at the 16th spot.

The performance of each races are more balanced on the North American Server with 3 Terrans, 4 Zergs and 3 Protoss players taking the top 10 spots. EGIdra is no doubt taking the rank 1 spot of the North American online game ladder. Idra has been performing superbly well since leaving Korea and has been dominating the North American server and has won the SC2 IPL tournament recently beating RootKiwikaki two times in a row for the grand finals and winners bracket finals.



Lets head over to the European Server. The European server tells a similiar story to the one in Korea where Terran players seems to be dominating the top 10 spots as well. 7 Terrans are ranked in the top 10 with only 2 Zergs and a Protoss being the rest.

This result is by far not the best indication of the overall race performance with a small sample size. This is just to give a view at the current top 10 race performance at the Korea, NA and EU online game servers. From the results here, it seems that the Terran are currently dominating both the Korean an European servers. Protoss and Zerg players seems to be having a little hard time claiming more spots for their perspective races.

I have to agree that there are definitely more higher level Terran skill players currently around the world. Lets take an example here at the invitees of the GSL Super Tournament. Nearly half of the players are Terran with Protoss and Zerg sharing the other half.

Is Terran the best race overall? I definitely think so. This is not to argue about any imbalance in Starcraft 2 but looking from the mechanics of the Terran race itself. Since Starcraft Brood War, most top players were Terrans such as the legendary Slayers_Boxer and Genius Terran Nada. Terran is deemed to have the best mechanics compared to other races. Terran players are given a wider variety and options in strategy and tactics. In the current SC2, Terran's mechanics enables them to either expand, pressure or haress easily. No other race can perform all these tasks at the same time except Terran.

From another perspective, it seems that most high level pro gamers are picking the Terran race as well. However, each race has its own strengths and weaknesses and Blizzard has been doing a fine job balancing Starcraft 2 so far. Lets hope that the other races will claim more spots on Battlenet online game ladders in the future.
