PvZ Dual Stargate Void Ray - Starcraft 2 Strategy

I have been messing around with on my Starcraft 2 online game ladder matches lately trying out new builds and SC2 strategy. After watching one of Whitera's 'Secret Tactics' replays, I have been captivated by one of his Starcraft 2 tactics of getting a fast expansion followed by 2 Stargates and massing Void Rays for the Protoss vs Zerg PvZ matchup. It is very surprising how strong and effective this sc2 strategy is.

This is probably an old build first done by GuineaPig in the early season of GSL (probably season 2) where GuineaPig showed the world how effective it is going for a fast expansion on maps such as Shakuras Plateau and then massing Void Rays and eventually switching to Colossus.

Basically, the whole plan involves setting up a fast expansion. Protoss fast expansion works wonders on maps such as Shakuras Plateau and Tel'Darim Altar as you can easily wall the front of your natural expansion with Forge, Gateway, Cannons, Pylons and eventually completing the wall with a Cybernetics Core. You will then throw down 2 Stargates and upgrade the +1 Air weapon off the Core skipping WarpGate research. The most important aspect will be keeping the Zerg in the dark as long as possible while massing as many Void Rays as possible. The best number is 4-5 VoidRays with +1 upgrade.

PvZ Dual Stargate Void Ray - Starcraft 2 Strategy Build Order
(I am not a big fan of build order but I'll try my best for this estimation)

  • 9 Pylon - Scout
  • 14 Forge
  • 17 Nexus
  • 18 Pylon
  • 18 Gateway
  • 18 Cannon (The order here can vary. If you scout the Zerg early and hes going for a 14 Hatch feel free do put down a 16 Nexus first followed by Forge. The important key here is to put down your Forge later when he throws down a Spawning Pool. You will have enough time getting your first Cannon up due to map distance.)
  • Continue Probes and get 2 Assimilator at your main base
  • Cybernetics Core when Gateway is done.
  • When Core is done put down your first Stargate
  • Grab 2 more Assimilator at your natural expansion
  • Train a Stalker (I normally skip the Sentry for a faster Stargate. The Stalker here is use to deny any scouting Overlords)
  • Get a total of 3 Cannons at your wall and put down a second Stargate and research +1 Air at your Core. When +1 is done upgrade Warpgate research.
  • Mass Void Rays and attack with approximately 5 Void Rays. Continue ralling Void Rays
  • When you are attacking the Zerg, focus down the Queens first. Followed by Hatcheries and Spore Crawlers if any. Do not waste your time targeting down Roaches. Once you cleaned up the Queens and his expansion quickly head over to his main and target down the Hydralisk Den.
  • This will often triggered a large counter attack by the Zerg if he is massing Roaches. Thus, be prepared with more Cannons at your wall.
  • Put down more additional Gateways and a Robotics Facility.
  • If your Void Rays do not end the game at this point, break your wall and grab another expansion and defend it with cannons. You will have a lot of surplus minerals stacking up.
  • You can then switch to Colossus with Gateway units or even Carriers and Motherships.
The most important factor when pulling this starcraft 2 strategy is keeping the Zerg in the dark as long as possible. Build your Stargate at somewhere safe from scout (at the middle of your base) with Pylons around the edge. Deny any scouting Overlords with your Stalkers.

This build is extremely effective due to Zerg's slow anti air defence before Hydras. 1 Void can take down a Queen individually. Small amount of Hydras can be dealt easily with your charged Void Rays.

What to transition out into?
  • Mass Warpgates. A mix of large Warpgate units with Void Rays
  • Expand into Carriers. This is a fun option.
  • Colossus and Gateways. The fearful Protoss Death Ball.

This is a replay of me pulling this mass Void Rays sc2 strategy against MoonGlade on Tel'Darim Altar.

Replay

This build is extremely weak against 2 base mass Hydras or Mutalisks. In the event where you are facing against Mutalisks, start massing out Phoenixes. Against Hydras throw down a Robotics Facility and get Colossus asap.Transitioning into Carriers are fun and I have seen Whitera pulling this off in his Special Tactics.

Good luck in trying out this dual Stargate Void Ray starcraft 2 tactics and sc2 strategy in your online game ladder matches.

Cheers

  1. Just to add. It is more advisable to just go into the Zerg's main base instead of his naturals to take down Queens, Hydralisk Den and Lair with your 4-5 Void Rays. If there are hydralisks popping out, focus them down with your Charged up Void Rays. Hydras die fast to focus fire and charged up Voids.

Remember to build additional Cannons at get a Robo at your base to transition into Colossus. The Hydras can be dangerous if you get your Colossus late.
