Starcraft 2 Workers; SCV, Drones, Probes HOLD and STOP Trick!

I realised that a lot of you players are still not familiar with this Starcraft 2 workers trick. The following will guide you through the whole process. HOLD is a better option than STOP but both works fines.

What is this worker trick all about?
The workers trick is basically, when you set your workers either SCVs, Drones or Probes to 'HOLD' or 'STOP' position using the 'H' or 'S' button, enemy units will not target them when you have other units such as Marines, Zealots, Zerglings etc around. With this trick you can reduce the amount of damage inflicted to your mineral line to the bare minimum.

This trick works best against melee units.

Why does this trick work?
This is due to the Starcraft 2 unit AI Artificial Intelligence. Units basically has target priority. If you set your workers to HOLD or STOP position, enemy Zerg units such as Zerglings will target and aimed at Marines first if he is just 'Attack moving'. If there are no other units except workers, the priority fall back to the workers. This AI target priority will not work if attack command issues are used on the Zerglings to focus down the workers individually.

Another example was during the previous patch before unit AI targeting on SCV's when they are set in repair mode. Units previously will  not attack the repairing SCVs while instead targeting the Thor itself unless attack target command is issued. Thus, Thor with SCVs was deemed broken during the last few patches until Blizzard fixed this.

If you set the workers to attack mode, they will be given the same target priority by the Zerglings.

How does this works.
Lets take an example here, If you have 2 Marines and and 15 SCVs, and 6 Zerglings are in your base. Normally if select all your Marines and SCVs to attack the Zerglings you may probably lose some SCVs. With this trick you basically want to HOLD or STOP the SCVs infront or around the Marines. The Zergling's target will come into play where they will be running around trying to reach the marines unless specific order is being issued to target down SCV's one by one. This is just purely an example as I am not considering mining time lost and you should be taking down the Zerglings faster with just attack move your SCVs and Marines.

Example

1. A Bunker filled with Marines and 12 Zerglings are in your base. Pay attention to where you build the bunker. If the Zerglings are moving towards the Bunker, select your SCVs and 'RIGHT CLICK' the Bunker. The SCV's will surround the Bunker and then press H or S for HOLD or STOP. The Zerglings AI will automatically target the bunker. However with the SCVs surrounding it, the Zerglings will be running around until the opponent issues additional command such as targeting the SCV's individually or move away.

2. 1 Zealot with Probes vs 6 Zerglings. Select all your units attack to the Zerglings with them. Let the Zealot and Probes deal some damage. Then press HOLD or STOP. The Zerglings will run towards the Zealot. Select all your units to attack the Zerglings again and repeat.

Practice this worker trick and find out your own ways of using this. Explore its possibilities.

  1. Thanks for this tip, I didn't know about it.

Very useful against melee units like zerglings or zealots.

    Good job

  2. Thanks. This requires a very good micro. You need to practice it enough to make it work. I feel that LiquidHuk has one of the very best Probe micro against Zerglings. HERO PROBES.
