Terran vs Protoss (TvP) Tips: Always kill Observers

If you are a Terran player in Starcraft 2, ALWAYS kill scouting Observers from your Protoss opponents. As a Protoss player myself, Observers provides too much information to me. Letting me know what the Terran's build order, tech paths and when are they moving out provides me a serious advantage and upper hand in the matchup.

Thus, I strongly suggest all Terran players out there to kill any Observers you spot with a Scan. A scan by Terran costs a Mule which often provides approximately 270 minerals over the Mule's life span. This opportunity cost greatly outweighs the benefit you gain from taking down an Observer. Typically, Protoss first Observer is the most important.

If you are able to scout the Protoss player opening with a 2 Gate Robo build, do expect an Observer heading to your base soon. However, good Protosses will hide their tech path from your scouting SCV. An experience Terran may use units such as a Reaper or Hellion to determine the Protoss tech path without wasting a scan.

Spotting the Observer as a Terran can be tricky at times. The easiest way to spot an Observer is when it is moving. A 'blurry image' will appear moving across the screen slowly. Good Protosses will often send the Observer into the Terran's base through your side base. When the Observer is stationary, the spotting job gets more complex. Most Protoss will land their Observers outside your ramp. Thus, pay more attention to this spot.

Easy ways to spot Observers
  • Observer is moving
  • Observer is place on top of a of a building or unit.
You can easily spot Observers that are stationary on top of buildings or units. This is due to its contrasting effect. Try this yourself. Its harder to spot Observers on the map itself.

Building a Raven is probably the easiest way to catch any Observers. However, this indicates that you are probably going for a one base Timing push with Ravens, Banshees, Marines and probably tanks.

Thus, I seriously recommend all Terran players to kill any Observers you spot.
