Zerg Team Game Building Placement

One of the main weaknesses of Zerg in Starcraft 2 online games for team matches such as 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 is Zerg's inability to wall the front of their bases. This is due to Zerg's unique design with the requirement of placing a tech building on larvae creeps. This has always been the way how Zerg works even from Starcraft 1. However, do not take lightly the Zerg's building placements in team games. I have defended countless online team games from Zerglings rushes to Baneling Busts with a well placed buildings around my main Hatchery.

This article will guide you the best way to build your Zerg bases for Starcraft 2 online games. The placement shown below are mostly used when you are not doing a early Spawning Pool Zergling rushes. If you are performing a 6/7 or 8 Spawning Pool, you will most likely build your Spawning Pool hidden behind your mineral lines or even at your allies base if both of you are sharing one base and both are Zergs. However, since the launch of Starcraft 2, most players are getting better at scouting compared to when this online game first came out. Most players will be scouting around and behind Zerg's mineral lines as this is the most common location for early fast Spawning Pool. The very best players can even tell from the numbers of Drones you have at certain timing point of the game.

From the snapshot taken above, pay attention to where the Spawning Pool is being built. It is directly next to the Vespene Geyser with a space on the left between the Spawning Pool and Hatchery. This is the best location to place your Spawning Pool.

When your Queen pops up, have the unit stand in the empty space between the Hatchery and Spawning Pool. This is a good location to defend against Zergling rushes and a safe spot for your Queen. The Spine Crawler can be build in the location above or at where the Queen is at. Spine Crawlers should only be build if you are facing early Zerglings rushes while you have a late Spawning Pool such as 14 food.

The best location for your Roach Warren or Evolution Chamber in helping to creating a good wall is probably the one shown above. You can always place the Roach Warren or Evolution Chamber on the right side of the Vespene Geyser to complete the wall on the right side. Before deciding the location, it is best to analyse your location on the map itself. Determine where is the entrance to your base and try to build and create a wall facing that side.

  1. Thanks for posting these articles about building placement. The zerg pool/queen placement looks very effective, I will try it tonight.

  2. I usually place my spawning pool there but I had not been putting my spine crawler in the suggested position nor my roach warren. I usually put my roach warren at the back of the minerals. I think I will start using this building placement.
